Stains along the edge of the carpet called air filtration soils, are a common problem on household wall to wall carpets. The most popular carpet gripper rods are made from plywood and metal pins which make a space (whole) in the carpet to let the dust push trough it causing the staines appearing on the carpet during time. Some specialist claim that it can happen also by the metal gripper oxidation.
A similar process appears on the edge where the carpet meets the skirting board.
Between the skirting board and wooden floor(under the carpet) there are usually gaps. If the gaps are not filled before the carpet is installed, after some time air traveling through the gaps will push the dust and the carpet fibres will work as a filter catching the soils.
