Hi, I’m Mair from CSB Carpet Cleaning, In this video, I’m going to be talking about carpet moth, now for those who don’t know what carpet moth is and how it affect your carpet, don’t worry I’ll explain all about it in this video. Now there has been a major increase in carpet moth lately, I seem to be coming across it more than ever before.
So how do you know if you have carpet moth in your home, well, If you notice small balding patches in the corners and at the edges of your carpets, the chances are that you have an infestation of carpet moth. This is a problem that needs immediate attention because it will continue to get worse.
You may see also, these silken cases or threads, they tend to spin webbing in areas where they like to reside.
So a little about carpet moths, the moth itself don’t cause any damage to your carpet, It’s the larva of the moth that does the damage. The larva actually eat the carpet fibres. You’ll only ever find carpet moth in wool carpets btw because wool is organic, it’s a protein and the larva, love it. It is not uncommon to find larvae the same colour as your carpet fibres btw having eaten the dyes in the carpet pile.
Now even though the moth itself is relatively harmless, and only live for about 2-3 months, the risk they propose is further egg laying. Now the moth will look for undisturbed, darker areas to lay their eggs – hence being more likely found under sofas and other furniture, behind curtains and along skirting boards.
The scary thing is that a Carpet moths can complete a number of lifecycles within a year. The adult female can lay hundreds of eggs in her short lifetime. the eggs lay dormant for approximately 4 to 10 days before hatching.
Their speed of development depends entirely upon local temperature, humidity and food supplies and can be as fast as 8 weeks from egg to adult, resulting in several generations during the summer, but the last generation of larvae will carry on as larvae through the winter, eating away your carpet while waiting for the warmer spring temperatures to pupate and re-start the adult cycle. and what’s worse, The larvae can live for up to 2 years which accounts for continued damage as they eat through the winter months.
Now Carpet moths are stubborn when it comes to leaving your home! A thorough treatment routine is needed to ensure the carpet moths are thoroughly eradicated and I strongly recommend a continual prevention regime because carpet moth infestations can become a year-round problem due to warmer weather combined with centrally heated homes.
